Playing with Black and White

Nothing good, just some fun.

Abstract

I think I’ll start this post with a quote:

Paintings are but research and experiment. I never do a painting as a work of art. All of them are researches. —Pablo Picasso

Now that quote should act as a warning, everything here is part of my research! They are just experiments, and for the most part failed experiments at that. I do hope these serve as some sort of inspiration though, even if they are terrible, horrible, no Good, very bad photos.

Just a Little Intro

I’ve been playing around with black and white photography for a while at this point. My mother is a strong proponent of black and white, and I agree with her! Being able to highlight the value of photographs allows me to play with light in a way I wouldn’t otherwise be able to.

The Photos

And Ilan said, let there be light: and there was light.

Not my hands, not my bulb, not even my phone. But when this hot light exploded, I ran over excitedly with my camera and got this overexposed garbage. Interesting though! The smoke is pretty awesome isn’t it?

Thank you person who helped me pose them!

I am not a dancer if you couldn’t tell. Luckily, a dancer put these miniature crash dummies in this pose before I came over. I wanted to play with shadows here, especially overlaying the natural shadow left by the dancers, and another shadow left by a grid metal.

Can you guess what this is?

That’s right! It’s an air vent. Batman also uses air vents, and therefore, I am Batman. On my days off from protecting Gotham, I decided to snap this shot just for the fun of it.

woof

One cute dog. One bad photo. I only put this here so that someone says, “Aww what a cute dog.” Now stop that. You look crazy talking to your screen!

G sharp or A flat: choose carefully.

I thought the reflections were pretty cool on those black keys. They look like little mountains, making the entire piano one huge mountain range.

Conclusions

These aren’t great photos, but I still have them here just to look at for inspiration to create something better!

Happy shooting,
Ilan Bernstein
