Quips

Our word is comprised of three things: quips, qualms, and quagmires.

Quips?

Quip • /kwɪp/ n. A witty or clever remark, often made spontaneously and intended to be humorous or pointed. v. To make a clever or witty remark.
Synonyms: witticism, jest, wisecrack, retort, zinger, quibble
Antonyms: statement, explanation, discourse, declaration

I love quips. I think one of the most amazing things in the world are short little witticisms that just hit the spot. So that’s what this post is for. I’m just going to list a few of my favorite quips!

Thomas Jefferson and John Adams

Thomas Jefferson and John Adams were sworn enemies for years. Political divide had ripped apart their Revolutionary friendship, and the two grew to hate each other. By 1812, the two finally rekindled their friendship and hundreds of letters were exchanged. What is well known about the two is that they both died on the same date: July 4th, 1826.

Adams’ last words.

Little did Adams know, Jefferson had died a few hours earlier.

Glasses

When I was in fourth grade, my genetically unlucky eyes decided to blur up. The astigmatism was real, and the board was blurred. My parents, both of whom suffered from the same fate, saw the signs. They rushed me to the optician, and my vision was fixed by a pair of glasses. As a child who was constantly asking, “How?” I needed to know how glasses worked. The best description my optician gave was, “they blur your vision back to normal.” This gave rise to my quip, glasses unblur your vision by blurring your vision.

My first glasses DID NOT look like this.

Quickfire Quips

  1. Jumping is really just falling to the planet above you.
  2. Socks are just foot prisons with colorful wallpaper.
  3. Coffee is but a bean soup broth.
  4. Spoons are just tiny shovels for your mouth.

And that’s a wrap!

That’s all I’ve got for you today, but next time you’re walking down the road and see something that makes you laugh, think: is this a quip? Have fun out there.

Best wishes,
Ilan Bernstein
